Our Story
Who we are
We are working to transform access to higher education for the Norfolk Island community by fostering a connected, supportive learning environment here on the Island. We’re breaking down barriers and helping our local students overcome the unique challenges of studying in a remote location.
Why we are here
People living in regional and remote communities like Norfolk Island deserve access to quality education and the opportunity to follow their aspirations. Our mission is to provide a local space where students are empowered with the tools, support, and connections they need to shape a strong, sustainable future for themselves and their community.
What we do
We have created a dedicated learning and study space right here on Norfolk Island purpose-built for our community by people who understand regional and remote life. Our students have free access to high-speed internet, modern technology, and general academic support, all provided at CUC Norfolk Island.
Who we are here for
We are here for anyone on Norfolk Island studying a university or non-university higher education course from an accredited Australian provider. We also offer remote support for Norfolk Islanders who are studying in Australia, helping them settle in and navigate their studies in unfamiliar surroundings.
We are here for local businesses and organisations too, those looking to connect with locally based students for placements, mentoring, or future employment opportunities. Whether you are a student or a community partner wanting to collaborate on work-integrated learning, we are here to support your journey.
How it all began
The Country University Centre Norfolk Island came about through a community driven effort that sparked when Geoff and Wallis Edwards purchased the old Prouds building with the vision of creating a space for education and development. Part of this building, known as The Shoebox, became the launchpad for exploring the idea of a Country University Centre. Following initial meetings in 2023 with support from Regional Development Australia Mid North Coast and the CUC team, a local board of leaders was formed to apply for funding. Although the first application was unsuccessful the second application in 2024 was overwhelmingly supported with over 50 community submissions and Geoff and Wallis holding the tenancy of The Shoebox open and so in 2025 CUC Norfolk Island LTD was officially established.
This new facility means Norfolk Islanders can now access support for further study without the need to move away. We’re excited to continue building higher education opportunities on Norfolk Island — now and into the future.
